Seven Miles and Sunny

I completed a seven mile run yesterday. Not only did I complete it, but my time is on pace for being my best half marathon finish ever, even running up a fairly steep incline at one point!  I will soon find out; I am running the Sam Costa Half Marathon March 26, 2011. Regardless of the outcome, it is such a blessing to run, no matter what my pace.

Not only was my run a good one, but the weather was beautiful: sunny and low 50s. The sky was blue and the air clear, a day to rejoice being alive. I felt like Julie Andrews on the mountain top in The Sound of Music; my soul was bursting with joy!

Nature’s Air Conditioning

I went running yesterday; it was 64 degrees in February! It felt good to run in capris and short sleeves instead of long pants, jacket, gloves, and a hat. I was almost too warm at times, but the breeze blowing across the snow in places made for some nice air conditioning. It was a run that was good for the soul. So far, I still have been able to avoid running inside this winter; the timing of snow and clear roads has been perfect. It would be nice to keep the combination of snow on the ground and 60s this summer, when it will probably be 80s and 80% humidity, but I guess I would need to head to the mountains for that to happen. Montana, here I come!

Birthday Party Food

Our grandson’s first birthday party is today. The menu is pizza and cake. Pizza has some nutritional value, but not so much the cake. Sure, cake has eggs in it, but you don’t get much nutritional value from them in a serving. Try scrambling three large eggs and dividing them between 12-15 people. That is a pretty small serving of eggs. Cake mostly consists of white flour and sugar. And the icing? Sugar and fat. So, I will try to avoid the temptation to down a slab of flour, sugar, and fat and play with my grandson instead. He is much sweeter, anyway.

Update:  I had pizza, chips, and a cupcake. If I would have stopped there, the damage wouldn’t have been too bad. But, the little bugger took a nap, and I snacked way too much on the chips, plus had another cupcake. I felt the junk food hangover the next day.

My new workout routine consists of chopping, prying, lifting, and throwing ice. My forearms are rock hard; hopefully I don’t start looking like Popeye. I finished the front walk, and I have a nice little strip down part of the driveway. If only I could have my gym fees waived while Mother Nature is my personal trainer.

As the neighbors drive by, do they wonder why I have been out moving ice for the last two days instead of the men at our house? Truth be told, I am highly motivated by being outdoors, even if it involves manual labor; except, I am not into gardening/landscaping. I do love to use a chainsaw! Maybe I just like to destroy or take things apart. Any of it sure beats housework!

The forecast was for freezing rain to start “later in the evening.” I wouldn’t call 5 p.m. late evening, but that is when it started falling. I really wanted to get a run in, especially since the streets won’t be cleared for a few days. The treated roads were wet at first, but the untreated roads were already icing up. Freezing rain and sleet pelted me as I ran. My hat and jacket (the parts not touching my skin) got a coating of ice on them. Three-fourths of the way through the run, the treated roads started getting slick spots. At three miles, I gave it up. My biggest fear wasn’t slipping and falling down; it was drivers going too fast and cars sliding into me. All is well, and I had fun and a great run, but I hope spring will be here soon!
