Olfactory Memory

Have you ever walked into a room and had an aroma take you back to your grandma’s kitchen, your childhood home, or your first car? This is your olfactory memory. Smell is strongly linked to past events, people, and places.

After passing some hydrogen sulfide in the bathroom as a result of French onion soup, my husband (who grew up on a dairy farm) walked in and commented, “It smells like the barn in here.” I’m so happy my flatulence brought him comfort in a childhood memory.

Favorites of Last Week

Here are my favorites from last week:

  • Spending ice storm and power outage with my husband, son, and son’s friend
  • Being outside in the beautiful sunshine for a whole day on Thursday, even if it was while I was breaking up ice on the front walk
  • Spending a couple of hours on Sunday breaking up ice on the driveway with my husband, what a team!
  • Watching the satisfaction on my husband’s face as the Packers won the Super Bowl
  • Celebrating my grandson’s first birthday
  • Getting a video message of my grandson giggling and repeatedly falling down (would show it to you, but WordPress will not download the format)

Birthday Party Food

Our grandson’s first birthday party is today. The menu is pizza and cake. Pizza has some nutritional value, but not so much the cake. Sure, cake has eggs in it, but you don’t get much nutritional value from them in a serving. Try scrambling three large eggs and dividing them between 12-15 people. That is a pretty small serving of eggs. Cake mostly consists of white flour and sugar. And the icing? Sugar and fat. So, I will try to avoid the temptation to down a slab of flour, sugar, and fat and play with my grandson instead. He is much sweeter, anyway.

Update:  I had pizza, chips, and a cupcake. If I would have stopped there, the damage wouldn’t have been too bad. But, the little bugger took a nap, and I snacked way too much on the chips, plus had another cupcake. I felt the junk food hangover the next day.

My new workout routine consists of chopping, prying, lifting, and throwing ice. My forearms are rock hard; hopefully I don’t start looking like Popeye. I finished the front walk, and I have a nice little strip down part of the driveway. If only I could have my gym fees waived while Mother Nature is my personal trainer.

As the neighbors drive by, do they wonder why I have been out moving ice for the last two days instead of the men at our house? Truth be told, I am highly motivated by being outdoors, even if it involves manual labor; except, I am not into gardening/landscaping. I do love to use a chainsaw! Maybe I just like to destroy or take things apart. Any of it sure beats housework!

Digging Out: End of Day 1

End of day one, and the ice won. I thought I would at least get the entire front walk done, but my back gave out around 4:00 p.m. The sun, not son, helped; the son had school. Unfortunately the solar heat melted ice on the roof, and the downspout is on the corner where the front walk begins, so the little space I cleared there filled with water and is now slicker than it was with the original ice. Maybe a spare floor mat would help keep people from slipping.

I was still able to run three miles around 5:30. I know, crazy, right? And thanks to department of transportation, the roads were clean enough that I could run outside. I stretched really well and took a few laps around the kitchen, dining room, and living room. If swimming helps my sore shoulder, then maybe running would feel okay for my back. It did feel okay running, but I can’t bend down, pick something up, and turn. Oh darn, I  can’t pick up the laundry basket or the vacuum. Well, off to Starbucks for a little reward!

Almost There!
